A1 Open Exhibition, Whitstable

The A1 Open Exhibition opens at the Horsebridge gallery in Whitstable on Friday 18th July. All the artwork submitted to the show was required to be A1 in size/format when framed and the show is a real visual delight, with a wonderful diversity of theme, media, and style to be savoured. Taking place during the Whitstable Oyster Festival , the exhibition is hung across both galleries at The Horsebridge and continues until 6pm on Sunday 3rd August.

My mosaic, L’Arbre de Couleurs (2008), was created specially for this event, using hand-cut foam tiles. I do not usually work to this size, but the A1 format, with its longer and more slender proportions lent itself perfectly to the shape of the ‘tree’ of the title. The work was framed unglazed, by Malcolm’s Framing – Folkestone, to ensure the vivid colours were not dulled by reflections from gallery lighting.

Please see The Horsebridge arts and community centre’s excellent website for further details of this and other events taking place there.

South East Artists Open Studios

South East Artists Open Studios is now taking place at locations across Deal, Walmer and surrounding villages.
A sampler of some of the work by artists involved in the event can be viewed in Deal library until Friday 25th July. A useful souvenir guide book detailing all the artist’s studios to visit is available from many locations around the town and beyond, including the Tourist Information desk at The Landmark Cafe in Deal. The brochure also contains handy maps to help find each studio. Look out for the distinctive SEAS banners displayed above artist’s houses.

I am exhibiting with Rosemary Stow on The Strand, Walmer, and she has very kindly allowed me to fill her front room with my artwork. I have a range of work on display in various media both framed and un-framed. Folding cards are available a £2.50 each, T-shirts at just £10 for an individual design from my studio. I will be working and demonstrating some of the techniques I use throughout the event.

FAC Summer Exhibition ’08

Chimaera Gallery 4th July – 19th July

An exciting selection of artworks by members of the Folkestone Artist’s Co-Operative are on display at Chimaera Gallery in Tontine Street, Folkestone. The show, coinciding with the Folkestone Triennial, highlights some of the local artistic talents of Folkestone and surrounding areas, with Co-Operative artists working in a diverse range of media and sources of inspiration.

One of my works, ‘L’Arbre de Couleurs’ Mike Tedder (2008) – a mosaic of vinyl on steel, explores a sense of joy in a multicultural society growing and thriving free from old nationalism and sparkling in the light.

For further information please visit the Chimaera website at www.chimaeragallery.co.uk.

Pavement Art at Bouverie Place

We had an excellent day drawing all over the pavement with our very first FAC Pavement Art at Bouverie Place Shopping Centre, Folkestone this June 7th. Drawing inspiration from Folkestone’s Multi-Cultural Festival, our designs added a touch of colour to the grey of the paving stones.

I used coloured squares representing diversity in society, celebrating variety and contemplating how a greater spectrum of national/international/world identity evolves.
