Come and join us at the Charlton Art Centre, Dover on Saturday 17th October for our drawing extravaganza as part of this years Big Draw event.

We will be exploring the evolution of plants, from their early origins to contemporary leaf forms and shapes that may evolve in the distant future. Participation is free, and materials will be provided for your use. All we ask in return is that you contribute work towards the project.

All artwork will be displayed in the main gallery space through October, as the evolutionary tree develops.

Our first printmaking taster workshop took place Saturday at the Charlton Art Centre, Dover. Visitors were able to experience and explore hand relief-printing techniques, from potato printing, mono-prints and linocuts. There was time to cut some lino blocks, using a selection of tools and environmentally friendly water-based emulsion inks, before pulling a short print edition with a small hand-press designed by German company Abig.

Sponsored by Dover Town Council, the workshop was one in a series of community workshops being staged by the White Cliffs Creatives Guild in Dover through 2009.

As part of this year Big Draw event, we are running a free printmaking mini-workshop at The Charlton Art Centre, in Dover, on Saturday 10th October from 10.30am until 12.30pm.
Come and sample a range relief-printing tecniques, including woodblocks, monotypes and even printing with the ‘humble’ potato.

Add your work to the Art Centre ‘tree’ as part of our evolutionary forest of leaves. Drawing upon the theme of leaf forms and Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, the exhibit will form the centre piece for our celebration of this years ‘Big Draw’ event throughout October 2009.

Akdeniz – woodcut print on paper

The White Cliffs Creatives Guild will be holding its Annual General Meeting at the Charlton Art Centre, Dover on Saturday 10th October at 2pm.

It is an important event in the WCCG calendar and provides current members a chance to vote and put ideas forward for the groups development and future activities. New members are always welcome.

The Guild are still running a “Featured Artist” slot on the website for members, so if you would like some extra exposure, please contact: secretary@wccg.org.uk to take advantage of the free publicity to add your artwork together with a short biography.

The Mill is an interesting place to visit and is open to the public with a tour of the Old Mill, it is a very picturesque setting in the village of River and has cafe and free parking opposite by playing field.

The Labyrinth ( Greek – labyrinthos ) of Greek mythology was designed as a structure to imprison the Minotaur, while prehistoric labyrinths were believed to have functioned as traps for malevolent spirits. Labyrinths are uni-cursal pathways leading to a centre, then back out again, and can also act as symbolic forms of pilgrimage, where people can walk the path, ascending toward salvation or enlightenment. A maze is constructed using dead-ends and false paths, but a labyrinth has only one path leading to the centre and back.

Each time a person walks the labyrinth, it is an individual and personal experience. The 180 degree turns, that are an integral part of the path through the labyrinth, are thought to alternate awareness between the left and right sides of the brain, inducing receptive states of consciousness. The time spent at the centre of each labyrinth can be a reflective and meditative experience, or a means of exploring personal inner space.
